But, as always get acquainted first with the regulations and rules for your country, province or state when starting a catering business.

Specify your Catering Business

Here are just a few topics what kind of catering you like to the targeted audience.

Always do your research first to spare you future troubles. Make sure you also do know your competition. How many are there in your region?

What kind of catering do they offer? What do you want to offer differently? Here are some options for catering:

  • Children’s birthday parties
  • Birthday parties for the rest
  • Parties for special occasions
  • Funerals

So, you have established what kind of catering you are offering and what kind of food and baked goods you can make.

You also should consider what is your maximum on people you want or can cook for. How many dishes, utensils, glasses, plates etc. Do you need to accommodate a certain amount of people?

Sometimes the customer will take care of these things, especially when it is a theme party or a wedding. Having the basics, although is necessary for you as a catering business to have.

How many people are too much or maybe not enough?

To start with a max. of 50 people may look a  lot to you, but it isn’t. The number of 150-200 is more reasonable as you might think.

But, then again, it really depends on where you live and what are your goals. If you like to offer your catering service as an affordable solution for smaller groups, you actually might hit a real target gem.

In the nowadays economy crisis, people still like to have options and many caterer businesses “only” do work for larger groups of people. Here is where you can come into the picture.

In the beginning, take it simple and grow from there. You already love cooking, you are more than good at it.

You update your knowledge and take courses now and then, after all, refining your cooking and baking skills are essential to your success. Word of mouth is still to this day the best advertising you can have.

You certainly could do all your advertising on your computer. There is so many software you can choose from to create awesome business cards, flyers, and brochures.

How much should I charge for my catering?

It really depends on how “big” you like to start and what you offer for menus a potential customer can choose from. Here are some costs you should have looked at first and think about it:

  • Cost of food, the whole menu including appetizers, entrée, main menu, dessert
  • The cost of driving. How far do you have to drive (back & forth), the price of gasoline
  • The cost of helpers. You might need at least one or two people helping you to deliver and set up the food etc.
  • Insurance. Having insurance is important and can spare you lots of possible trouble

You have to do your research and find out what are the common charges for catering in your area and go from there. No one is perfect, but over time, you certainly will gain not only more knowledge but confidence too.

Just always believe in yourself!!! I certainly do 🙂

  2. You have a part 1 and part 2? Great! I love those types of posts! I’ve actually wondered how I would go about starting a catering business once upon a time. This post here is a great way to start, and you have a well-broken down introduction.

Also, I would like to say that Vista print is actually a pretty solid idea for quick and cheap advertising. I’ve used them personally a long time ago and was very impressed by the product they were able to deliver.

      thanks, for mentioning it.

  3. In this day and age of people losing their jobs or only being told they can work 30 hours per week people need to look at ways to make more money…I know lots of great cooks who love to cook. A friend of mine bought a hotdog cart and is making money to save for a house.

    1. Hi Mac,

Wow, a hotdog cart sounds yummy 🙂 Yeah, I hear you what you saying and I also do agree. My intensions are to empower people, in this case the target are women, to show them that there are options still out there if they want to have a career based from home.

  4. Hi Sylvia, I’ve always wanted to start a catering business. I love cooking but just for small family gatherings. I wonder what food can i serve for a children’s party that is good for 30 persons and can be served in buffet style? I heard that you should serve food that are not easily spoiled for a buffet style setting.

    1. Hi Keye,

Greaat questions and here comes the part where you have to do your due diligence to get more information about what to serve best at a children’s party. I am not a cook myself or being interested in doing catering. Although, I do know people around me who are doing it.

I think it does depend on what you want to do and in your case by narrowing it down it certainly gives you some good starting points to research more on it. I do believ what you have in mind it certainly can become a success.

      Keep rolling!! 🙂
